Romantic locations

What’s better than hearts, flowers and a big box of posh chocs? Well, that’s certainly a good place to start. But, for most of us, a romantic escape really seals the deal. Eurocamp – big softies that we are – has rounded up five of our favourite spots so beautiful they’re sure to make St Valentine blush…

The Dordogne

They say – whoever they are – that the fastest route to a person’s heart is via their stomach. Treat us to the hearty fare of France’s Dordogne region and we’ll love you forever. Here, fine food, fantastical châteaux and fabulous countryside collide to create the most delicious, and romantic, recipe. A holiday that’s sure to please the gastronome in your life, Dordogne offers rich, indulgent cuisine – try the magret de canard (duck breast in a bewildering variety of sauces), paired with the region’s world-class Rose wines, and it’ll be a dinner à deux they’ll say ‘I do’ to.

Love: Take a romantic river tour from Beynac. Glide peacefully along the River Dordogne, with its rocky banks topped with flamboyant castles.

Stay:  Intimate, peaceful and utterly charming, Camping Le Capeyrou encourages couples to get close to nature, and our Safari tents are simply adorable: a luxurious, excellently appointed retreat, deep in a protected area of great natural beauty.

The Black Forest

Sometimes, finding somewhere far from the madding crowds is the quickest way to win your partner’s affection. But Germany? Romantic? It might not immediately spring to mind. But one look at the picture-perfect medieval towns, the rolling hills and ancient vineyards of the Black Forest and you might well find your heart skipping a beat. This is fairy-tale territory – the setting for many of the Grimm brother’s timeless tales. This mountainous region in the southwest of the country is a lesser-explored (at least by us Brits) gem. And who doesn’t love a cute cuckoo clock?

Love: The region’s excellent wines are celebrated on the Baden Wine Route, snaking its way through vineyards and villages – with tastings aplenty en route. Try the pretty town of Lahr, with its excellent Wine Festival in May, and scores of atmospheric, candle-lit cellar bars.

Stay: Peaceful little Campingplatz Herbolzheim is charm personified. An authentic, beautifully situated parc that’s just perfect for walkers and cyclists. Trust us – a walk in the Black Forest should be on every lovers’ wish list.

There’s passion, and there’s Sicilian passion. This sunbaked island has seen its fair share of love and affection – and tempestuous affairs, come to that – as it’s been invaded by civilization after civilization over the centuries. Now, the southernmost province of Italy is a land that moves to its own beat. Bathed in that dazzlingly pure Mediterranean light, and scored with countless Byzantine churches, Roman temples and Baroque palaces, it’s a land where beauty is never far from the surface. And that – definitely – goes for the food too.

Love: A day trip to tiny Favigana is a must. There’s something about an tiny, idyllic island that makes the spirit soar. Hire your own boat, or take an excursion around the island to one of its many secret coves.

Stay: What sets your loved one’s pulse really racing? If its scaling new heights, or diving new depths, chances are you’ll love our El Bahira parc, with its own diving school, and the excellent rock climbing afforded by the limestone cliffs nearby.

The French Riviera

Ah, just the words are enough to make us swoon. The glamour. The beaches. The yachts! Some places really are more blessed than others. And, for our money, the Riviera is it. And them some. If you really want to push the boat out – without the need to buy a 50ft super yacht, a break in the sultry south of France will hit the spot every time. Strolling along the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, enjoying lunch in a Saint-Tropez Bistro, or shopping for something fabulous in Cannes. Yes, it’s not hard to fall head over heels in love with the Côte d’Azur.

Love: For a really romantic escape route, head four kilometers inland to arguably the most delightful village in the south of France. Perched high on a rocky bluff, Gassin is a 13th century beauty, with bars strung out along its medieval terraces.

Stay:  To compete with all this beauty, a parc really has to be up for the challenge. Enter the gorgeous Holiday Marina Resort – a sleek French stunner, this English-run parc’s waterside pitches and relaxing Jacuzzi can’t fail to impress.

The Alps

Snowy peaks, scenic passes, wildflower meadows and mountain villages. Yes, The Alps really do tower above the competition. Europe’s movie star mountains, they arc across 700 miles of the southern mainland. A landscape of superlatives, they encompass some of the highest, grandest, purest, and remotest places on the continent. And Switzerland enjoys access to the best of them. But it’s not all lofty peaks. Lake Thun offers idyllic waterside towns, pretty beaches and – everywhere you look – those jaw-dropping views of mountains beyond mountains.

Love: Nestled in a valley of roaring waterfalls, Lauterbrunnen is – for many – the quintessential Alpine village. Cascading down sheer cliffs, waterfalls roar, spray and shimmer their way to the valley floor. We recommend a trip to the mighty Truemmelbach, where a tour takes you inside the mountains themselves.

Stay: Always wanted to swim in a pure mountain lake? Manor Farm parc has direct access to a private lake beach, after which you can soak in the tremendous views from this, your delightful Alpine hideaway.
